Ask your child to recite Surah Al Fatiha and listen to the very last word.

The correct sound is wa lad daalleen, with a heavy D made by pressing the side of the tongue against the upper molars. Most children raised in Urdu or Hindi speaking homes say wa lad zaalleen, with a Z. They have read it that way for years and nobody has told them.

Now listen to siraat in the same surah. The S should be heavy and the T should be heavy, both with the tongue raised toward the roof of the mouth. Most children flatten both. This is not carelessness. Urdu and Hindi do not contain every sound the Quran needs, so several Arabic letters collapse into one when a child grows up speaking them.

Four groups cause nearly all of it. Dhal, Zay, Dad and Zha all become a plain Z, though in Arabic they are four separate letters made in four places in the mouth. Tha and Seen both become S. Haa and Ha both become H, one from deep in the throat, one from the back of the mouth. Ain is often skipped or read as a plain Alif, because Urdu has no such sound.

A teacher who has memorised the Quran hears these as they happen. A teacher following on the page, or listening to twenty children at once, usually does not.

Whether you actually need us

India has more Quran teaching than almost anywhere on earth. Darul Uloom Deoband, Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow and Jamia Nizamia in Hyderabad have trained scholars here for generations, and thousands of local madaris teach every evening. If you live near Charminar in the Old City, or in Aminabad, Jamia Nagar, Bhendi Bazaar or Park Circus, a qualified teacher is walking distance away and costs very little. Use them.

We suit a narrower situation. Families in Whitefield, Powai, Hinjewadi, Gachibowli or the Gurgaon sectors often find the nearest madrasa an hour away in traffic, and that hour is paid twice a day. Households where both parents work rarely have someone free to drop and collect. A qualified Hafiza who teaches girls privately is hard to find in most cities. And a class of twenty moves at one pace, which is wrong for a child who is behind, ahead or simply shy.

Your first month, week by week

• Week one: The teacher finds the real starting point, not the assumed one. If your child reads already, this week is spent listening for which letters have settled wrong.
• Week two: Work begins on the mouth, not the page. One or two letters at a time, with the teacher showing where the tongue sits.
• Week three: Those letters go back into words your child already knows, usually from the short surahs, so the correction sticks to something familiar.
• Week four: A short review, and you get told plainly what improved and what did not.

Progress after that depends far more on the ten minutes of practice between lessons than on the lessons themselves.

What this costs, plainly

Thirty dollars a month, roughly two thousand seven hundred rupees, for twenty lessons. Five a week, Monday to Friday, thirty minutes each, one teacher to one student.

That is more than most academies here charge and far more than a neighbourhood madrasa. We will not pretend otherwise. What the difference buys is one teacher working with your child alone for the full half hour, five days a week, who has memorised the whole Quran. If a group class or a cheaper tutor suits your family, take it.

Starting as an adult

Many adults reach thirty or forty without being able to read Arabic script, and almost nobody says so out loud.

Lessons are private. You are not sitting with children who read better than you. Teachers who work with adult beginners start at the letters, then joined letters, then short verses. Reading usually comes in six to eight months at five lessons a week. Sisters can request a female teacher.

How to test any teacher, including us

• Ask the teacher to say Dad and Zha one after the other. If they sound the same, that teacher carries the habit your child will learn.
• Ask what they will cover in the first month. A clear answer names a stage. A vague answer names a feeling.
• Watch one correction. A teacher who corrects once and moves on is teaching. One who repeats the same letter eight times until the child stops speaking is not. Ask what happens when your child misses a week.

Noorani Qaida for letters and their sounds. Nazira with Tajweed for reading from the mushaf with the rules applied. Hifz with revision built in from the start. Tarjuma and Tafseer for meaning. Deeniyat covering kalima, namaz, duas and hadith. Urdu for children losing the language at home.
