Most people searching for a Quran Teacher Barbados can book will already live within reach of a mosque, and that is worth saying before anything else. Quran Pak Teacher is not here to replace what the island already built. We teach the students the existing setup serves least well, one to one over video from Lahore.

What Barbados already has

Islam on the island goes back to Bengali merchants arriving around 1910, followed by Gujarati families from February 1929, who settled around Tudor Street and the Milk Market and later opened stores on Swan Street. The first mosque opened at Kensington New Road in 1950 and was expanded in the late 1980s to hold over 600 worshippers. Jama Masjid, built in coral stone by Mohammad Yusuf Degia, opened on 26 January 1951 and seats 528. A second mosque followed at Sobers Lane in 1957. Prayers run five times a day, with Friday congregation just after midday.

There is more than mosques. The Islamic Teaching Centre began in the 1970s and now sits at Harts Gap in Hastings, Christ Church. Al-Falah Muslim School runs both primary and secondary. The island has resident scholars, huffaz, alims and alimahs. Around 2,000 to 3,000 Muslims live here, close to 1.5 percent of the population, most of them in and around Bridgetown with newer households in Belleville, Wanstead, Oistins, Warrens and along the South Coast.

If your son can walk into a halaqah at Kensington New Road, send him. We would rather lose the enquiry than pretend otherwise.

Where the gap actually falls

Only a couple of the island’s mosques have facilities for sisters. Darul Fazal near the airport is one of them. For a woman in St Lucy, St Andrew or St Philip, the practical question is not whether Barbados has Islamic education. It is whether there is a seat for her, close enough to reach, at an hour that works around her household.

Starting as an adult

Afro-Barbadians have been entering Islam steadily since the late 1960s, and that has not stopped. A Bajan revert learning the Arabic letters at forty sits in a community where Gujarati families have been Muslim for four generations and where children recite fluently by nine. The barrier is rarely access. It is sitting in a room where everyone else already knows what you do not.

A private class removes the audience. Nobody hears you sound out a letter three times. There is no level we consider too late a start, and our teachers are used to adults who have carried this for years.

Finding an online Quran teacher in Barbados who fits the clock

Barbados runs on UTC minus four with no seasonal change. Lahore is UTC plus five. That is nine hours, and it rules out most of the Barbadian evening for us.

What works is morning. A 7:00 am class in Bridgetown is 4:00 pm in Lahore, and 8:00 am is 5:00 pm. Those are ordinary afternoon hours for our teachers, which means a before-school or before-work slot is the most reliable thing we can offer you, and the one least likely to be moved. Later Barbadian times are possible but sit deep in the Lahore night, so we will be honest with you at booking about which windows we can hold week after week. Classes run Monday to Friday. We do not teach at weekends.

Recitation and school of thought

We teach Hafs an Asim and follow the Hanafi madhhab, which is what the Gujarati and Guyanese-descended families on the island already follow. Nothing your child learns here will need correcting against what an uncle recites at home.

Classes for women and girls

Ask for a female teacher and one is assigned before your trial class rather than after. Our female teachers take the same courses as the rest of the staff. Mothers often book a slot of their own alongside a daughter’s, usually because nobody taught them properly as children and they would rather work on it privately.

Our courses

Noorani Qaida has no age floor or ceiling. It builds the letters, their joined forms and the vowel marks, and it is the right starting point for a seven year old and for a fifty year old who took shahada last year.

Quran Reading is where pronunciation gets fixed. The teacher hears every letter you produce and corrects it in the moment, privately, which is the whole reason one to one works better than a group for anyone self-conscious about reading aloud.

Hifz suits students already studying elsewhere who want memorisation paced individually, with earlier portions revised in every session so nothing is lost across school holidays.

Tarjuma gives word by word meaning. It matters here because many Indo-Bajan families are three or four generations from Gujarat and the heritage language has thinned out, so recitation has outlasted understanding.

Tafseer covers context and commentary, and is often the course adult reverts want once reading is steady, because it answers questions the Friday khutbah does not have time for.

Fees, trial and how payment works

Twenty classes a month of 30 minutes each cost 30 USD, 30 GBP or 30 EUR. Barbados uses its own dollar, so the USD tier is the one that applies, and your bank will handle the conversion. Two named teachers lead our Quran instruction, Hafiz Ali Ahmad and Hafiz Umair Akram, each with ten years behind them. A parent is welcome in any class. Recording goes both ways, so ask us and we will ask you. If a teacher stops being available you hear it from us before the next class, with progress notes passed on so the next teacher picks up where you left off rather than starting again.
