Quran Teacher Myanmar

Islamic Quran Academy gives Burmese Muslim families live one to one Quran lessons over video. A Hafiz or Hafiza teaches for 30 minutes a day, Monday to Friday. Fees are $30 a month for 20 lessons. Male and female tutors are available. You get three free trial classes before you pay anything.

Who these classes are for

We teach Burmese Muslim families wherever they now live. Children, adults and complete beginners are all welcome.

Some of our students are in Yangon, Mandalay or Mawlamyine. Many more are Burmese families who have settled in Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom or the United States. Rohingya families are welcome, at home or abroad.

Yangon has a long Muslim history. The Surti Sunni Jamah was built around the 1860s and is thought to be the oldest surviving Muslim place of worship in the city. The street it stands on was once called Mughal Street (Lonely Planet). Nearby, the Bengali Sunni Jameh stands opposite Sule Pagoda and Yangon City Hall, with a madrasa beside it teaching religion and Arabic. There are smaller masjids on Bo Sun Pat Street and out in Tamwe Township and Dala.

For families who no longer live near any of them, this is what we offer instead.

What you need to join a class

You need a phone or a laptop and a working internet connection. A phone is fine. Most of our students in Asia join from a mobile.

Connections are not always steady. If your lesson drops, message the teacher and we will finish it later the same day or add it to the next one. You do not lose the class. If your connection cannot handle video, tell us and the teacher can run the lesson on audio, with the page shared as an image.

Classes run on Zoom or Google Meet. Both have free apps for Android and iPhone and neither needs an account to join.

Class times for Myanmar

Myanmar keeps MMT, which is UTC+6:30. Our teachers work from Lahore at UTC+5. So Myanmar runs one and a half hours ahead of us.

That makes the timing easy. A 5pm lesson in Yangon is 3:30pm here. A 7pm lesson is 5:30pm. An early morning slot before school, say 6:30am in Mandalay, is 5am here and we can arrange it.

For Burmese families in Malaysia, which runs UTC+8, a 7pm lesson in Kuala Lumpur is 4pm in Lahore.

Weekend lessons are available if weekday timings do not suit.

Who will teach

Two of the teachers working with families in Asia are Hafiz Ali Ahmad and Hafiz Umair Akram. Both have memorised the Quran in full. Our wider team includes tutors from Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Lessons are taught in English or Urdu. None of our teachers speak Burmese or Rohingya. We are telling you this before you book rather than after. For a beginner, the teacher works in slow, simple English and teaches the Arabic letters by sound and repetition, which is how this is taught everywhere. Take the three free classes and see how it feels before you decide anything.

You can ask for a female Quran teacher when you book. Many families want a woman teaching their daughters, and sisters learning alone often prefer it. We do not treat this as a special request.

Your child keeps the same teacher. If the match is wrong, tell us and we will change it at no cost. You can watch how our teachers work and read what our students say.

What we teach

Noorani Qaida for anyone starting at the Arabic letters. There is also a longer Qaida course for kids and adults.

Quran reading, or Nazra, for students who know the letters and want to read fluently. This is also where recitation is corrected line by line.

Quran with Tajweed: This is where the real work happens. Speakers of Burmese and English both struggle with the letters ح and ه, which sound the same to an untrained ear, and with ض, ظ and ع, which have no match in either language. The teacher slows the sound down and shows where in the throat it forms. It takes weeks, not one lesson.

Hifz for memorisation, whether that is Juz 30 or the whole Quran.

Tarjuma and Tafseer for students who want to understand what they recite.

Fees and payment

$30 a month covers 20 lessons. That is 30 minutes a day, five days a week, one to one. No joining fee, no charge for materials. Full fee details are here.

Sending money out of Myanmar is difficult. If you are inside the country and cannot pay, a relative abroad can pay for you and many families do exactly that. Message us and we will work out what is possible before you start. You pay nothing for the three trial classes either way, and our refund policy is published in full.
