Who these classes are for

Cuban families abroad who want their children reading properly. Reverts who own a Spanish translation but cannot read the Arabic script. Adults in Havana whose relatives overseas can cover the cost. Women and girls who want a woman teacher.

Pakistan and Cuba have a longer link than most people know

Islam in modern Cuba was shaped partly by Pakistanis. Students from Pakistan came to study at Cuban schools in the 1970s and 1980s, and Pakistani medical students in Havana helped form the first regular gatherings. After the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, the Cuban government took in hundreds of Pakistanis, some of whom settled and stayed.

We teach from Lahore. When a Cuban Muslim learns from a Pakistani teacher, it is not a new arrangement. It is how much of the community started.

What learning the Quran looks like from Cuba

Pew Research Center counted 6,000 Muslims in Cuba in 2011. Recent estimates put the number near 10,000, under 0.1 percent of about 11 million people. Most are converts. Reporting from Havana notes the community speaks little Arabic and reads the Quran in Spanish.

There is one mosque, in Old Havana near Casa de los Árabes, where around 200 people gather on Fridays. Pedro Lazo Torres, known as Imam Yahya, leads the Islamic League of Cuba. Before the mosque opened, people prayed in each other’s homes.

Most Cuban Muslims still learn alone.

Slow internet is not a reason to give up

Cuba has one telecoms provider. Speeds usually sit between 1 and 5 Mbps and connections drop. Video calls often fail.

Reading does not need video. Your teacher listens to you recite and corrects what they hear. We run audio only lessons over WhatsApp for students on weak connections. A lesson works at speeds too low for anything else.

How families abroad pay for lessons on the island

The United States embargo blocks card payments and PayPal into Cuba. Nobody there can pay us directly.

The answer is simple. A relative in Miami, Madrid or anywhere outside Cuba pays, and the student joins from home. We agree the schedule with the student and send the receipt to whoever pays. Nothing passes through a Cuban bank.

Reading from zero, through our Noorani Qaida course. Most adults reach short surahs in a few months.

Sounds Spanish does not have. There is no ح or ع in Spanish, so most new readers turn both into an h or a swallowed a. Your teacher makes you produce the sound, hear the difference, then repeat it until it holds. That work happens in Quran reading with Tajweed.

Teaching someone who is new to Islam

Most Cuban Muslims are converts, and that changes how a teacher should work.

A revert has no family to ask, no childhood memory of the letters, and often a worry about looking foolish. Our teachers are used to adults starting from nothing. Nobody will be surprised by your question, and nobody will assume you already know something you do not.

Women teachers are available for sisters. You meet your teacher in a free class before paying anything, and if the fit is wrong we will match you with someone else at no cost.

Safety for children

If you are enrolling a child, you should know exactly how this works.

A parent may join or watch any lesson, at any time, without telling us first. Teachers do not message a student outside scheduled lessons, and anything they need to say goes through the account holder. We check qualifications and identity before hiring anyone.
