Your child studies with the same teacher every weekday, thirty minutes a lesson, one student and one teacher. Twenty lessons a month cost 30 euros, which is about 14,760 Comorian francs at the fixed rate. You get three free trial classes before you pay anything.

How these lessons fit with Quran school

Almost every child here goes to Quran school from around age five and stays two or three years. That is where they learn the letters, the basics of the faith, and some classical Arabic. The US State Department counts more than 200 government supported schools offering Quranic instruction across the islands. Hundreds of mosques serve about 850,000 people, and roughly 98 percent of the country is Muslim.

So we are not here to replace what you already have. Our lessons pick up where the local Quran school stops.

Most families come to us for one of four reasons. A child finished Quran school but still makes Tajweed mistakes nobody has time to correct one by one. A child wants to continue Hifz and needs daily attention. A family wants translation and Tafseer, which few local classes cover. Or an adult stopped at age eight and wants to start again.

Class times across the three islands

Comoros runs on East Africa Time. Our teachers are in Lahore, two hours ahead. A four o’clock afternoon lesson in Moroni is six in the evening in Lahore. A seven o’clock evening lesson is nine at night there.

Both are easy for us to staff, which is not true of every country we teach. School here follows the French model, with six years of primary from age six and attendance required from seven to fifteen, so late afternoon and evening slots are what most families want. Weekend lessons are open too.

The language your lessons are taught in

Read this part before you book.

Our teachers teach in English and Urdu. We do not have a teacher who speaks French or Shikomori. Quranic Arabic is taught as Arabic, so the recitation itself is not affected, but the explanation around it will be in English.

That works well for families where a parent speaks English, and for Comorian families living in English speaking countries. If your child only follows French, we are not the right fit yet, and we would rather tell you now than after three trial classes.

Which recitation we teach

We teach Hafs an Asim. This is the reading in the standard printed Mushaf and the one most Comorian students learn.

Comoros follows the Shafi’i school of law. That affects prayer and jurisprudence, not how the Quran is recited, so a Shafi’i student and a Hanafi student learn the same Tajweed rules from the same reading. If your family reads differently, say so in the first lesson and we will tell you honestly whether we can teach it.

Who teaches your child

Hafiz Ali Ahmad has taught for ten years. He teaches Noorani Qaida, Quran reading and Hifz.

Hafiz Umair Akram has also taught for ten years. He teaches Quran reading, Tajweed and Tarjuma.

We have female teachers for sisters and for girls whose parents prefer it. Your daughter keeps the same teacher every session, not a different one each week.

What we teach

Noorani Qaida covers the Arabic letters and correct pronunciation. Most students who join us have already done this locally, so we often use it as a check rather than a starting point.

Quran reading with Tajweed is where most of our Comorian students begin. We work on the points of articulation, the sounds that give non Arab readers trouble, such as telling ح apart from ه, and where Qalqalah falls. Our own experience is that a beginner takes six to twelve months to read fluently, depending on daily practice.

Hifz is memorisation in small daily portions with steady revision of what is already learned.

We teach students from age four to elderly learners. Adults who stopped years ago are welcome, and lessons are private, so nobody else hears you.

For Comorian families abroad

Many Comorian families now live in Marseille, the Paris region and Mayotte, where local Quran teaching is harder to find than it is at home. We teach those families at the same fee and the same times, adjusted for the local clock.

Where our students are

We teach across Ngazidja, Nzwani and Mwali. Students join us from Moroni, Mutsamudu, Fomboni, Domoni, Mitsamiouli and Foumbouni, and from the villages around them.

Fees in Comorian francs

30 euros a month for twenty lessons. The Comorian franc has been fixed to the euro since 1999 at 491.96775 francs to one euro, a rate set under the monetary agreement with France, so the price does not move with the market. Thirty euros stays close to 14,760 francs.
