What the numbers say about Muslims in Belize

The 2010 census recorded 577 Sunni and Shia Muslims in the country, according to the US Department of State 2023 Report on International Religious Freedom. The same report puts the Ahmadiyya community at about 200. Total national population at the 2022 census was 397,483.

Community life centres on Masjid al Falah on Central American Boulevard in Belize City. It opened on 16 May 2008 and is run by the Islamic Mission of Belize, registered with the government since 1978. The mission also runs the Muslim Community Primary School.

So our advice depends on where you live. If you are near Central American Boulevard and can get your child to the masjid, use what is already there. Our classes are built for the family in Belmopan, in Ladyville, out toward Cayo, or on a farm past Orange Walk Town, where the drive is long and nothing local fits around school hours.

One more thing shapes how we teach here. A large share of Belizean Muslims came to Islam as adults rather than being raised with it. That means most of our Belize students begin with the Arabic letters, not with memorisation, and we plan lessons that way.

Class times that work between Belize and your teacher

Two windows are staffed every weekday, Monday to Friday.

Early morning in Belize, 6:00 am to 9:00 am, lands at 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Lahore. This suits children before school.

Evening in Belize, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, is early morning for the teacher the next day. This suits working adults and parents.

Lessons run 30 minutes each, with 40 minutes possible for older students. If you need a slot outside these hours, ask us and we will tell you honestly whether we can staff it.

Online Quran Reading with Tajweed

Once the letters are steady, you move to reading from the mushaf. Your teacher corrects pronunciation as you read, in the moment, not at the end of the lesson. Tajweed rules are explained in English first, then practised in Arabic until they feel natural. We teach Hafs an Asim, the recitation used at Masjid al Falah and across the Americas.

Quran Memorisation

Memorisation works in small daily portions with steady revision of what came before. We do not rush students through long surahs to show fast progress. Many Belize families start with Juz 30 and the short surahs used in daily salah.

Reading is one skill and understanding is another. This course gives you the meaning of the words, available in English or in Urdu. It suits students who can already recite but want to know what they are saying in prayer.

Teaching in a country where English and Kriol are spoken

English is Belize’s official language, and Belize Kriol is spoken by most people in Belize District. Every lesson we teach here is in English. Rules are explained in plain English first, then applied in Arabic until they stick. Our teachers also speak Urdu, which helps families with Pakistani or Indian backgrounds.

Female teachers for sisters and daughters

Female teachers are available for women and girls, and you can request one when you book. If your daughter is more settled with a female teacher, say so at booking and we will match her. If the fit is wrong after the trial, you can change teacher at no cost.

How we keep children safe in class

Every teacher is identity checked before being assigned a student. Your child keeps the same teacher rather than a rotating pool, so you know who is on the call. Any parent may sit in on any lesson without giving notice. Sessions run on Zoom or Microsoft Teams, and you can record. If anything worries you, you can message our admin directly on WhatsApp and reach a person, not a form.

Fees and paying from Belize

Our standard plan is 30 US dollars a month for 20 classes, Monday to Friday, 30 minutes each. The Belize dollar has been fixed at 2 BZD to 1 USD by the Central Bank of Belize since 1976, so that plan works out at about 60 Belize dollars a month with no exchange surprises.
