Belief in One God
From my years of studying religions and interacting closely with different communities, I’ve seen how Muslims believe in One, indivisible, God, Allah. The name comes from the Arabic word for God and reflects submission and trust. Islam is a major world religion, first promulgated in Arabia in the 7th century ce. The term islām literally surrender explains the fundamental religious idea that every believer, every Muslim, accepts the will of Allāh, the sole creator, sustainer, restorer of all human beings.
Prophets and Sacred Scripture
Muslims revere prophets from earlier faiths such as Adam, Moses, Jesus, and honor Muhammad as the final prophet and messenger. The Quran, a holy book, is believed to be the direct, revealed word of God, offering peace and guidance for daily life. In my experience, many Muslims see the Quran not only as a text but as a source of moral balance and personal reflection.
Core Practices in Daily Life
Life in Islam is shaped by the Five Pillars, the core practices that include faith declaration (Shahada), prayer (Salat), charity (Zakat), fasting (Sawm), pilgrimage (Hajj). These practices build discipline, gratitude, and care for others. Jihad is often misunderstood; it means struggle—to strive and live a good life, not just war.
Global Presence and Diversity
Muslims have a strong Global Reach and live worldwide, with large populations across Asia, Indonesia, India, Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Islam is the Fastest Growing faith and the world’s most rapidly growing major religion, primarily due to high fertility rates, with over 1.5 billion to 1.7 billion followers. The faith reflects Diverse Cultures, is very diverse, and includes major branches such as Sunni (87–90%) and Shia (10–13%), speaking hundreds of languages.
Misconceptions and Reality
In everyday interactions, I’ve seen that the vast majority of Muslims are Not Violent and reject extremism. They view Islam as a peaceful religion rooted in submission to God’s will. Muslims are Integrated into modern society, active in holding jobs, voting, and using technology like smartphones and the Internet.
Historical and Modern Contributions
Islamic civilization has significantly contributed to science, mathematics, algebra, and philosophy. These contributions continue today through education, business, and community service. From personal observation, many Muslim families emphasize learning, ethical work, and respect for neighbors, showing how faith and modern life can move forward together.
