First question: Warsh or Hafs?

Most sites skip this. It matters more than anything else here.

Across West Africa, most people learn the reading of Warsh ‘an Nafi’. It spread with Maliki scholarship, and most mushafs printed in West and North Africa follow it. In Pakistan, India, Egypt and the Gulf, people read Hafs ‘an ‘Asim, standard since the Egyptian printing of 1923.

Both are correct. Both come down through unbroken chains. They differ in small things you would notice at once: the basmala at the start of a surah, the length of certain madd, and a few letters written differently on the page.

We teach Hafs

Be honest with yourself before booking. If your mushaf is a Warsh copy and you learned at a local maktab, a Hafs teacher will correct things your first teacher taught you properly. That helps nobody. Look instead for a teacher from Morocco, Mauritania or Senegal holding a Warsh ijazah.

If you read Hafs, or you are starting from zero and want the reading used in most of the Muslim world, we are a good fit.

How to check which one you have

A Warsh printing usually says riwayat Warsh on the title page, and the vowel marks look different from a Hafs copy. Ask your imam if you are unsure. Any imam in Libreville will tell you in a moment.

Who we teach

Gabonese families who want their children reading correctly. Families from Senegal, Mali, Niger and Nigeria settled in Port-Gentil or Franceville for work. Adults who went to a maktab as a child, can read, but were never taught the rules. Women and girls who want a woman teacher.

Islam is about 10.8 percent of Gabon’s population of roughly 2.5 million. There are around 24 mosques in the country, the largest in Libreville, Port-Gentil, Franceville and Oyem. Outside those four cities a qualified teacher nearby is hard to find.

Lessons in French

Your teacher explains the rule in French, then you apply it in Arabic.

French speakers meet the same three sounds every time. There is no ح, no ع and no خ in French, and French drops the h sound altogether. So ح goes silent, ع becomes a plain a, and خ turns into an r. Your teacher makes you produce each sound from the right place in the throat, hear the difference, then repeat until your mouth does it without thinking. This takes a few weeks and it decides whether your recitation is correct for the rest of your life.

Class times and connection

Gabon is one hour ahead of GMT. Pakistan is four hours ahead of Libreville, so a 7pm lesson in Libreville is 11pm for your teacher. Evening slots are limited. Morning and afternoon slots are open.

Airtel and Moov both run 4G in the main cities, and around 72 percent of people in Gabon are online. Video lessons work well in Libreville and Port-Gentil. On a weak connection we teach audio only.

How to pay

Mobile money is how most of Gabon pays. Airtel Money and Moov Money handled over 7 billion dollars in 2024. Tell us which you use and we will send instructions.

Thirty dollars a month covers twenty classes, roughly 18,000 XAF. Five days a week, thirty minutes each. Your first three classes are free with no card details.

Qualifications, and how to check ours

Since this page opens with a question about qualification, it is fair that you can ask the same of us.

Before you book, ask which reading a teacher holds and where they studied. We will answer plainly. If a teacher holds an ijazah we will tell you who granted it. If a teacher is experienced but does not hold one, we will tell you that too.

Women teachers are available for sisters and girls. You meet your teacher in a free class before paying anything.

Safety for children

A parent may join or watch any lesson, at any time, without telling us first. Teachers do not message students outside scheduled lessons. We check qualifications and identity before hiring.
