Learn at home with a live teacher, one to one on video. Lessons are 30 minutes, five days a week, scheduled in Bhutan time. Male and female teachers are available. Fees are $30 a month for twenty classes, and you get three free trial classes before you decide anything.

Why Muslim families in Bhutan look for an online teacher

Bhutan has a very small Muslim community. Pew Research Center estimates from 2010 placed Muslims at between 0.2% and about 1% of the population. The National Statistics Bureau of Bhutan put the national population at roughly 770,300 in October 2023 (US State Department religious freedom report).

Many Muslim families here came for work. India’s Ministry of External Affairs estimated 60,000 Indian nationals in Bhutan before the pandemic, working in hydropower, construction, trade, health and teaching. Most left during the pandemic and only a fraction have returned. Bangladeshi families live here too, mostly near the southern border towns.

So a parent in Thimphu or Phuentsholing faces something a parent in Delhi or Dhaka does not. There is no maktab down the road. No weekend madrasa. Nobody in the building who can teach your daughter her qaida.

Teaching your child when there is no local class

Most parents try three things before looking for a teacher.

Teaching it yourself works if you read well and have patience. But correcting a child’s pronunciation is a different skill from reading. You can hear that something is wrong without knowing which rule was broken.

Apps and YouTube help with revision. They cannot hear your child recite and they never correct a mistake. A child can practise a wrong sound for a year and nobody stops them.

Waiting for the next trip home means two months of teaching and ten months of forgetting. Most children end up back where they started.

What works is a real teacher who listens every week. That is the whole reason online lessons exist.

How long does it take to learn to read Quran?

A child who has never seen the Arabic letters usually needs three to five months on Noorani Qaida at five lessons a week. That is the foundation, and rushing it causes problems for years afterwards.

From there, reaching fluent reading takes another six to twelve months. A child who already reads but pronounces badly usually needs three to four months of focused correction. An adult starting from nothing often reads independently within six to eight months.

Anyone promising faster than this is selling something. A five year old and a nine year old do not learn at the same speed, and how much a parent revises at home changes everything.

What happens in a 30 minute Quran lesson

The teacher greets your child and settles them for a minute or two. Then comes revision of the last lesson, because nothing moves forward until yesterday is secure.

The middle of the lesson is new material. Your child reads aloud and the teacher stops them the moment a sound is wrong. This is the part apps cannot do. A mistake corrected in the first week never becomes a habit.

The last few minutes are practice and homework. Afterwards the teacher notes what was covered and what needs work at home.

Which course should my child start with?

Beginners start with Noorani Qaida: letters, sounds, and how they join.

Once the letters are secure, they move to Quran reading with Tajweed, where pronunciation is corrected out loud as they read.

Children who read fluently and want to memorise move into Hifz and memorisation. This is a long commitment and we will tell you honestly whether your child is ready.

Older students and adults often want meaning. Quran Tarjuma covers word by word translation and Tafseer covers context and explanation. All six programmes are on our courses page.

The trial includes an assessment. If your child is ahead of where you thought, we will start them higher.

Lesson times that fit Bhutan

Bhutan runs on UTC+6. Our teachers are in Pakistan, one hour behind you. That hour matters more than it sounds.

Academies teaching families in Europe or America run classes in the middle of the night for the teacher. A tired teacher at 2am does not correct makhraj carefully. Your 6pm lesson is our teacher’s 5pm.

Evening slots run roughly 5pm to 9pm Bhutan time on weekdays. Mornings and weekends are open for adults. The Bhutanese school year runs from about February to December, so we plan around the long winter break rather than pausing through it.

Male and female teachers

For many families this decides everything, so we will be plain. We have qualified female teachers, and a girl learns with the same woman every week.

Adult women learn with us too. Many of our students are mothers who read a little but were never taught properly, and prefer learning privately to sitting beside their own children. You can read what our students say.

Urdu and Hindi speaking teachers

This matters more in Bhutan than in most places we teach. Most Muslim families here are Indian or Bangladeshi.

Our teachers speak Urdu, Hindi and English, so a child can be taught in the language spoken at home. Explaining a rule directly is easier than translating it twice.

We also teach Urdu as a separate subject. Families raising children far from relatives often watch the language disappear in one generation. Several parents enrol a child for Quran and Urdu together.

What you need and what it costs

A phone, tablet or laptop and a working internet connection. Lessons run on [platform] and there is nothing else to install.

Classes are 30 minutes, one to one, twenty lessons a month, Monday to Friday, for $30. The Ngultrum is pegged to the Indian Rupee at par, so families paying from either side of the border pay the same. What online lessons cannot give you

We would rather set the expectation than oversell.

Your child will not have classmates. No group recitation, no walking home with friends, none of the atmosphere a real madrasa has. If your family moves somewhere with a strong community, use it.

What we give is consistency. The same teacher, the same time each week, mistakes corrected as they happen, and progress you can hear. For a family with no local option, that beats atmosphere.

Lessons are private and for families who already practise. We teach reading, tajweed, memorisation and meaning. We do not do outreach of any kind.
