Where Muslim families in Congo live

Islam in Congo is old, and it is not spread evenly.

Kasongo in Maniema province is the historical birthplace of Islam in the country, and Muslims make up around 80 to 90 percent of that town. In Kindu, the provincial capital of Maniema, about a quarter of the city is Muslim. In Kisangani, the third largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, estimates run from 10 to 30 percent. Beni territory has an imam serving roughly 35,000 people.

Kinshasa is home to the head office of the Communauté Islamique en République Démocratique du Congo, founded in 1972, with branches at provincial and local level.

Across the river in Brazzaville and down in Pointe Noire, the community is much smaller again.

What this means in practice is simple. In Kasongo or Kindu you may find a teacher nearby. In Kinshasa, Lubumbashi, Goma, Bukavu, Brazzaville or Pointe Noire, finding a qualified Tajweed teacher who can take your child every day is much harder.

Class times in your own hours

Kinshasa and Brazzaville both run on UTC+1. Eastern provinces such as North Kivu, South Kivu and Maniema run on UTC+2. Our teachers work on UTC+5.

That difference is small, so the timetable is easy.

A six o’clock morning lesson in Kinshasa is ten in the morning for your teacher. A four o’clock afternoon lesson is eight in the evening for us. A six o’clock evening lesson in Goma is nine at night for your teacher.

Early morning before school, late afternoon after school, and weekend mornings are all open. Very late evening slots are limited, so book those early.

What language your class uses

We teach in Arabic, English and Urdu. We do not teach in French, Lingala, Swahili or Kikongo.

We say that plainly because it matters, and because the answer is better than it sounds.

The Qaida is learned by sound, not by translation. Your teacher says a letter, the student repeats it, and the teacher corrects the mouth position and the length. A student who understands basic English can follow a lesson from day one. A student comfortable in Arabic can take the whole course in Arabic, which suits many families in Maniema and Kisangani where Arabic is already used in study.

When the internet is slow

This is the question families in Congo ask most, and it deserves a real answer.

Mobile data now carries most of the country’s telecom traffic, but coverage still drops and power cuts happen. So we build lessons around that.

If your video will not hold, your teacher switches the class to audio only, which uses far less data. If the connection fails completely, the lesson continues on a WhatsApp voice call. If a class is lost to a power cut or an outage, you get that class back at no extra cost.

Reading practice is sent ahead of the lesson, so your child can work from it even when the signal is gone.

Every teacher at Islamic Quran Academy has memorised the whole Quran. We have male and female teachers, including native Arabic speakers from Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Female teachers for sisters and girls

Ask for a female teacher and we will assign one. The call is private and nobody else joins it. There is no travel, no waiting outside a mosque, and no concern about hijab, because the room is your own.

• Noorani Qaida: Arabic letters, sounds and Makharij for complete beginners.
• Quran reading with Tajweed: Covers Makharij, Sifat, Qalqalah, Madd, Noon sakinah and Tanween, Meem sakinah, and the rules for stopping.
• Hifz: Daily memorisation with a set revision cycle.
• Tarjuma: Word by word meaning.
• Tafseer: Context and explanation of the verses.
• Urdu: Reading and speaking.

For children, and for adults starting from zero

Children can begin from about four years old. Thirty minutes fits around a school day without turning study into a burden.

Adults are welcome at any age. Many of our students opened the Qaida for the first time in their thirties and forties. At five lessons a week, most adults finish it in six to eight months. Because the class is one to one, nobody hears you make mistakes.

Fees and paying from Congo

$30 a month for 20 lessons of thirty minutes, Monday to Friday, one to one. Full details are on our monthly fee page.

Paying from Congo is easier than it used to be. Mobile money reached about 34 million active accounts in the country by early 2026, led by M-Pesa, then Airtel Money and Orange Money. Be aware that withdrawal charges can be steep, so ask us before you send anything and we will pick the cheapest route together.

Card, bank transfer and mobile money are all workable. Message us and we will confirm what suits you.
