Neighbors: A Key Element of Islamic Society
Islamic teachings emphasize that human beings were descended from Adam and Eve, and through them, we are all part of one big family. Muslims believe that our behaviour towards others should be guided by the principles of brotherhood and respect, forming the basis of an ideal society. The Qur’an, a complete code of life, reminds us that our interaction with others is crucial, and this includes our neighbours. In a world where we are all interconnected, people are urged to be kind and considerate, as it directly impacts the welfare of the community. Neighbors play an essential role in ensuring the dignity and security of one another. Through Taqwa, or the fear of God, Islam teaches us to treat our neighbours with respect, affirming that the rights of our neighbours are sacred and should never be overlooked. Allah calls for these social ties to be strong and full of compassion, as neighbors contribute significantly to the fabric of society.
Allah says:
Allah commands us to serve those in need, including neighbours, orphans, and kinsfolk. We are urged to treat parents and neighbors, whether near or strangers, with the utmost respect, as they have a right upon us. Allah reminds us not to be arrogant or vainglorious, but to join in good and meet the needs of others with humility, just as the Companion on the side of the wayfarer is to be helped by the hands we possess.
Respecting Neighbors in Islam
The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) said, “People who harm their neighbours are not true believers.” He praised those who keep their neighbours safe from harm, emphasizing that evil acts against them contradict the importance of Neighbourhood in Islam. Just as The Rights of Parents in Islam are highly emphasized, so too are the rights of our neighbours. Allah has made it clear that a complete society values peace, and we should never harm those who live around us. This statement reflects the high value Islam places on maintaining good relations with those near us.
It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that:
The Prophet, Peace and blessings upon him, said that a true believer does not harm their neighbour. Allah commands us to keep our neighbours safe from evil, and this reflects the essence of Islam. The Messenger of Allah also asked us to treat our neighbours well, making them feel secure and respected in their neighbourhood. A person who does not respect these rights is far from being a true follower of Islam.
Neighbours in Islam: A Call for Respect and Kindness
In the neighbourhood, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in his hadiths, stated that Jibril recommended treating neighbours in a good way. He emphasized that the rights of neighbours should be upheld, to the extent that it reached the level where we should include them as if they were heirs. Islam teaches us that acting with good behaviour towards neighbours is a sign of blessings from God, as verses of the Qur’an also urge kindness and respect.
The Messenger of Allah, (Peace and blessings be upon him), said
The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) said that Jibril kept recommending to treat neighbours well until he thought that neighbours would be treated as heirs. He urged us to always make sure to treat them in the best way possible.
The Importance of Caring for Your Neighbours
Islam has declared that maintaining a peaceful environment in the community is essential, and it starts with how we care for our neighbours. The Messenger of Allah, Peace and blessings upon him, in a Hadith, stated that we should always fulfil the needs of our neighbours and treat them in the same way we would like to be treated. Abu Dharr reported that the Prophet commanded to prepare broth and give it to our neighbours, ensuring they have plenty of what they need. In return, we build a strong bond, where each person helps other in fulfilling their contacts and responsibilities. This is how Islam teaches us to behave and show respect towards Neighbours, as this pleases Allah.
Share Food with your Neighbour
In Islam, it’s a responsibility to look after our neighbours. A Hadith mentions that believer should share food with neighbours and be aware of their situation. Doing so is seen as a deed that pleases God and benefits us in this life and the hereafter, teaching us to always consider doing good for others.
The Messenger of Allah, (Peace and blessings be upon him) says:
A believer should never eat while their neighbour is hungry or beside them, as Islam teaches us to share what we have. It’s said that a person goes against the true spirit of brotherhood if they fill their stomach while ignoring their neighbour.
Always Respects your Neighbour’s Gift
Islam advises mankind to always accept and respect a neighbour’s gift, whether it’s a simple sheep’s foot or something more valuable. By doing this, we maintain love and respect among us, fulfilling the Islamic principle of caring for one another.
It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari:
In Sahih Bukhari, Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet Peace and blessings upon him said that one should never scorn a neighbour’s gift, even if it is a sheep’s foot. Muslim women were also urged to respect gifts, showing kindness in all situations.
Islam emphasizes the importance of neighbours through verses and hadiths, declaring the rights of our neighbours. It sets a perfect example of humanity, urging us to show respect and appreciation for any gift they offer, as it reflects the great value of giving in Islam.
