1. Returning the Salam of the Absent
When someone conveys another person’s Salam to you, it should be returned properly. The correct reply includes both the one who sent it and the one who delivered it, showing respect, care, and completeness in greeting.
2. How should a Group Reply to Salam?
If a group is greeted, one reply is enough on behalf of everyone. However, if a Salam is directed at a specific person, that individual must reply himself.
3. Saying Salam to a Sleeping Person
Salam should not be given to someone who is sleeping. It is meant for those who are awake and able to receive it without disturbance.
4. Saluting with Fingers or Palm
Salam should be spoken with the tongue. Using only hand signs, fingers, or gestures is discouraged unless words are also spoken.
5. Give Salam Loudly
Salam should be said clearly and loud enough so the other person can hear and recognize the greeting.
6. Reply Instantly
Replying to Salam should be done immediately. Delaying without a valid reason is considered sinful and requires repentance.
7. Reply Loudly
The reply should be loud enough for the person who gave Salam to hear it clearly.
8. Giving Salam to a non-Muslim
Salam should not be initiated with a non-Muslim. If they greet first, a brief reply is allowed without full wording.
9. Bowing for Salam
Bowing while giving Salam is forbidden if it resembles Ruku. Slight bowing is disliked, though respecting elders without bowing is encouraged.
10. Returning the Salam of a Woman
Salam from elderly women may be replied to normally. Salam from a young woman should be answered softly, without attracting attention.
11. Replying to a Written Salam
A Salam received through a letter or message must be replied to. It can be done verbally first and then in writing.
12. Conveying Someone Else’s Salam
If asked to pass on a Salam, do not reply immediately. Deliver the Salam to the intended person exactly as it was given.
13. Do Not Give Salam to These
